Roger Thompson

Art Tutor

Roger Thompson (Otago Dip Fine Arts, Dip Teaching) is a distinguished artist and art educator based in Riverton, New Zealand. Raised in Queenstown, he developed a strong connection to land and sea. This connection shaped his lifelong interests in climbing, skiing, sailing, diving, and painting the landscape. His work spans sculpture, painting, and teaching. Thompson’s career reflects a commitment to learning, community, and creative exploration. He has exhibited internationally, contributing stone, steel, bronze, corten steel, ice, and metal works to projects and symposia in Sicily, Macedonia, China, Sweden, Canada, Greece and Beijing. His practice explores narrative, cultural exchange, material, texture, and context through CNC laser- and plasma-cut steel, bronze, clay, carved stone, and wood. His sculpture uses natural patinas and three-dimensional form, while his painting focuses on light across land and sea as an ongoing dialogue with the viewer.
